Seek God. Trust God. Rely on God. Accountability to God

Scripture Focus: 2 Kings 4:1-7 ( I encourage you to read your bible to know the whole story about the widow’s oil)

1.SEEK GOD

The story tells us to seek God (verse 1). The prophet serves as the messenger of God to the people. Prophet Elisha served as the messenger of God’s word to the widow. We will focus on God as He is the source of the message Prophet Elisha told to the widow.

When I read this story, God reminded me of the verse in Matthew 6:33:

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”

2. TRUST GOD

God answered but His response through Prophet Elisha to the widow is to get jars (not few) and fill it with oil from a little bottle of oil (verse 3-4). What? Is it possible to fill all the jars with oil from a little bottle of oil? Sound impossible in human’s view, right? But the widow remain in faith to God and did what God told her to do (verse 5-6) and it happened. This reminded us to TRUST THE LORD all the time. He knows the best for us as His will for us is good, perfect and pleasing (Romans 12:2) and His plan for us is plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). When God gives a promise to you through His word, trust Him and in His time, you will receive.

3. RELY ON GOD NOT TO THE BLESSINGS RECEIVED

When all the jars are filled, the oil stopped flowing (verse 6b). God did this so that the widow will not rely in the little bottle of oil but instead rely to God. This reminded us that we should not rely on to the blessings that we received, but rely and hold on to the source of the blessings, our God.

What do you think will happen to the widow on the long run if God did not stop the oil from flowing?

4. BE ACCOUNTABLE TO GOD AND GIVE THANKS TO HIM

The widow went and told the man of God (verse 7). The widow showed her accountability to God. After she received the blessings, she went back to God. When we received blessings from God, always go back to God, give thanks to Him and ask God for His wisdom on how we will manage the blessings we received according to His will.
