Ephesians 6:11-18
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints...
How can we stand against the schemes of the devil? By putting the whole armor of God! Take note of the word "whole", it means "complete", "full", not just some.
God has given us a whole armor - a full set of equipment. We cannot just put on the helmet and disregard the rest, or just wear the breastplate, helmet, and disregard the shield.
Why do we need the whole armor of God? Because we are in a spiritual warfare. Whether we like it or not, we are in the battlefield. The enemy is prowling like a lion ready to devour us. Without the strength of God and the protection of the whole armor of God, it is impossible for us to stand against the attacks of the enemy.
What are the components of this whole armor?
1. Belt of truth
A belt is an essential part of a soldier's equipment. It was of special use in keeping other parts in place, and in securing the proper soldierly attitude and freedom of movement (Salmond). Before the armor is placed, the garments underneath must be gathered together with a belt.
The truth of the gospel keeps us secured. And in this security, we'll be able to boost our confidence and move freely.
2. Breastplate of righteousness
The breastplate provides essential protection for the most vital organs, and that includes our heart.
And righteousness, is not our own righteousness, but the righteousness received by faith in Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21).
The breastplate of righteousness is our best defense against the sense of spiritual depression and gloom that comes against us (Guzik).
3. Shoes on the readiness given by the gospel of peace
We must be mobile, flexible and ready with the truth. And having our feet grip in the foundation of the gospel helps us to undertake long marches, stand on our ground and move with stability.
4. Shield of faith
Shield is an active defense and can also be used for offense. Faith is represented as a shield, protecting us from all the flaming darts of the evil one. Again, take note of the word "all". Our faith can protect us from "all" not just some flaming darts of the enemy. The enemy tries to steal, kill and destroy, tries to instill lies, doubts and fear, but our faith can protect us from this scheme of the enemy.
5. Helmet of salvation
Jesus saved us. It is a finished work of Christ. It is trusting not our own self, but to trust God for his redemption. But the enemy is trying to twist this truth by instilling lies, discouragements and doubts to us. The helmet of salvation helps us to be strong against these lies, against these schemes. It protects us against discouragements, against the desire to give up. It gives us assurance of God's triumph through Christ.
6. Sword of the Spirit which is the word of God
The word of God is our sword. It is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intensions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).
It is important for us to know and understand the word of God, the Bible, and experience the power of the Holy Spirit as we grow in relationship with God. Meditate on God's word day and night, and make it engraved in our lives.
And in all times, with the whole armor on, let's pray without ceasing, with all prayers and supplications.
Father, thank you for giving me your whole armor. I am not worthy of it, but you have given it to me freely as I surrender myself to you. Always remind me that I am victorious because your Son, Jesus, had won the victory. May I continuously desire you more than anything in this world. As this world is a battlefield, may you give me wisdom and knowledge to use your whole armor with confidence. In Jesus' name.
Amen.
